France-based Carrefour has entered Iraq with the opening of its first hypermarket in Erbil's Family Mall in the capital of the Kurdistan Region of the country. The store has an area of 10,000 square metres spread over two floors. It is the first of several hypermarkets to open in partnership with Erbil-based Darin Group, Majid Al Futtaim (MAF) Retail's partners in Iraq, with two more locations in Erbil planned soon. New Carrefour hypermarkets are under construction in the cities of Sulaimaniyah and Duhok and will open by 2014.
The opening of the first Carrefour hypermarket in Iraq was delayed for more than a year due to "logistics-related issues and the lack of finding employees" at MAF's Erbil operations, according to iErbil.
